The church was built with land and money donated by the people of Florina to preserve their Slavic language, because they wanted to hear the Bible in their native tongue, not another language that they did not understand. My point is you cannot deny the Slavic character of Florina, no matter how many buildings you demolish. The Slavic culture in Florina is prevalent in the topographical names of the area, in the traditional costumes of the people, in the customs, and the songs. Even today the language has survived. So what did Augostinos accomplish by destroying the church? Absolutely nothing. Only Florina lost a part of its soul.

Exactly, he regarded the church for what it was… a church build from slavophone Bulgarians for slavophone Bulgarians. Since at that time no more Bulgarians lived in Florina and the church needed to be renovated… why not build one from scratch?
So what is your point? that slavophone Bulgarians are Greek?
And for your information… the Slaovophone “Macedonian” population in all the Balkans is considered Bulgarian by the Bulgarians. Thus if you have an issue with this, go first to Bulgaria, and get your facts corrected.

Τα μαγαζιά αυτά χτίστηκαν σε χώρο του ελληνικού σχολείου. Ο χώρος αυτός ανήκε στην ελληνική ορθόδοξη κοινότητα Φλωρινης επικεφαλής της οποίας ήταν η εκκλησία στα χρόνια της τουρκοκρατίας. Και επειδή τότε ο μόνος ελληνικός πατριαρχικός ναός ήταν του Αγίου Γεωργίου πέρασαν στην ιδιοκτησία του.

κ. Μεκάση ευχαριστούμε για το άρθρο σας, έχω μόνο μία ερώτηση για την τρίτη από το τέλος παράγραφό σας, αναφέρετε ότι τα μαγαζιά της οδού μητροπόλεως ανήκαν στον ναό του Αγίου Γεωργίου, αληθεύει η πληροφορία αυτή ή έγινε λάθος εκ παραδρομής;

The author Dimitris Mekasis left out an important piece of information. Bishop Augoustinos had a policy of discrimination against the Slaovophone-Macedonian population of Florina and he tore down many historic churches (Florina, Amyntaio, Prespa) that were built by the Slavophones. In a 1973 interview published in the Greek newspaper “Epikaira”, a journalist asked Augoustinos why he destroyed the church St. Panteleimon in Florina and the others, Augoustinos replied: “Was I supposed to spare these churches that were built by Bulgarian hands?”. This is a confirmation and proof that Augoustinos regarded the Slavophone population Florina as non-Greek.
